# Is squatting part of the housing movement?
Squatting is the practice of taking up space without seeking permission with a long tradition dating back to pre-capitalist times. Squatting has been an answer to the urgent situation of lack of housing and an act that has been pushing the political terrain. In considerations of squatting there has been a tendency to divide squatting into squatting out of necessity and political squatting posing as a militant act and part of social movements. During the so called housing crisis the use of empty buildings for shelter and housing has been embraced by the housing movement as an answer to homelessness due to foreclosures and urgent need for shelter. This has brought to requisitioning of squatting and politicization of squatting out of necessity.

**How to work together:**
Read the proposed articles before you come to the session. Make a survey about squatting out of necessity. Design a questionnaire together. Divide in groups of two. Go outside and make interviews with people. Do as many as you can. Come back and share your impressions with others. Compare the results. Share the interviews and results with other Pirate Care Syllabus users by downloading it on the web page.
